Health Promotion Program
Introduction
To provide basic health services, primary education, income generation opportunities and development of institutions to empower the underprivileged communities. HANDS started its health promotion program in 1979, in the rural area of Gadap & Bin Qasim Towns (former Malir) to provide primary health care services. The health indicators like IMR, MMR and health awareness in communities were very poor at that time. HANDS gradually expanded its health care services. HANDS under changed strategy trained local females as Community Midwives and males as Community Health Attendants, who provide services to the community at their doorsteps under the supervision of HANDS and respective local community organizations. We also facilitate the two government
hospitals, one in Karachi and the other in Hala. The program plays pivoting role in health advocacy, quality services, patient rights, research and control of epidemic diseases in the intervention areas.
Project Status
During the year 2004 - 2005 HANDS had seven projects under the aegis of its health promotion program. Two new projects launched in the reporting period were; Clinical Family Planning and Safe Drinking Water funded by Future Group International in collaboration with Aga Khan Foundation and John Hopkins University, USA respectively started and concluded in the same year.

Referral Strategy
HANDS worked on referral strategies between community-based Reproductive Health Centers (RHC) and secondary health care outlets. For this purpose referral strategies have been devised at community level. During the reporting period no maternal death was reported in any of the area served by HANDS.
Community Midwifery Training Program
To reduce maternal, infant and neonatal morbidity and mortality, HANDS started its Community Midwifery Training Program in 2002 in both CMWs training Schools at Taluka Hospital Hala and CDG-HANDS Hospital Karachi rural. Total 92 CMWs have been trained since then. Currently 19 CMWs are studies in these schools.
