HANDS-ESRA Adult Literacy Project

Project Title  

“Access to education for all, through non-formal adult education”

Introduction

In District Sanghar, literacy is very low, only 30.87 % (above 10 years) are educated (females 17.45 & males 42.88).

 
HANDS started working on literacy project in September 2003 after signing the agreement with Education Sector Reforms Assistance Program (ESRA). 207 Adult Literacy Centers have been established in two Talukas Shahdadpur (115) and Tando Adam (92), District Sanghar. 

Goal
To improve the livelihood of the poor through non-formal education and community based intervention in two Talukas Shahdadpur and Tando Adam of District Sanghar.

Objectives 

  • To increase adult literacy rate in targeted population from the present status.
  • To train and strengthen School Management Committees & Women Learning Committees (WLCs) in selected villages.
  • To Train Community Teachers.
  • To establish adult literacy centers in selected villages of the two Talukas.
Literacy status in District Sanghar
The illiterate population of the district is 564260 (above 15 years of age). 76% children of 10-12 years of age are out of school.

Progress & Achievements

  • MoU has been signed with District Government and Education Department.
  • Trained project team in Literacy Curriculum.
  • Held 67 large community meetings in villages to mobilize the community.Prepared FGD questionnaire.
  • Conducted 12 Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) to collect and incorporate local vocabulary in the curriculum.
    Screened 461 villages.
  • Conducted 326 PRAs in 163 villages.
  • Capacity Building:
  • Identified and trained 302 members of SMCs.
  • Identified and trained 181 Community teachers. Established 207 Literacy Centers (Males centers 99, females centers 108).
  • Total Enrolled 8280.
  • Drop out rate 5.7%.
  • Literacy Material Development:
  • USTADAN JO RAHBAR (Teacher Guide)
  • USTADAN JO RAHBAR (Pictorial) containing 27 pictures related to codes/ lessons
  • RAHNUMA (Manual for SMC members)
  • Developed Flash cards containing 52 letters of Sindhi alphabet.
  • Provided material to the centers (black board, mats, sign boards, flash cards, teachers manuals and pictorials).
  • Developed and introduced Management Information System (MIS) at the centers (Attendance Register, Visit Book, Meeting Register, Cash Book and learners’ portfolio, learners’ profile and village profile).
